Industry Connect has once again helped someone find a job in the IT sector! This time it’s Ann, who recently landed a  BI Developer job. We caught up with her to ask her about her time with Industry Connect, and how we helped her along the way.

First of all Ann, congratulations on your new job! Can you tell us a bit about your background before you came to Industry Connect?

Sure, I graduated last year from University, studying Information Systems, but afterwards I didn’t apply for any jobs because I wasn’t confident enough in my technical skills because I lacked experience.

Then one day my friend told me about Industry Connect, so I did a bit of research and thought that they would help me a lot in getting a job, so I signed up for the course.

Yeah, we see quite a few people in that position where they’ve done this study and they’ve got the degree, but it’s just not quite enough to get a job – they just need that little bit more. So did you find that the program helped you?

Yeah, it’s a wonderful program and in the first six weeks we got the technical training with our tutor who came from the IT industry and had many years experience. They were really are knowledgeable and practical. So after six months training, we get the three months internship opportunity as well, which allows us to utilize what we learn from the training program.

And then of course once you’re on the internship, it’s great for your technical skills; you get some real practice and you’re working on a team as well, so you get a chance to build some of those other skills. Did you find that valuable?

Yes, it was really valuable for me, because it’s not just all about the technical skills, but also about some soft skills, like presentations and how you communicate with the team and how you solve problems with the team.

Because in the real world it’s always a team effort and you need to have those skills as well. So is there any anything that you’d like to say to anyone who’s in that position? Perhaps graduates who are looking for work?

Yeah, this program is for people who are in the similar position to me; someone who recently graduated from university, someone came from other country, someone who studies, someone who wants to start a new life in New Zealand. If you’re struggling to get a job in IT industry I definitely recommend you sign up for this program and take a chance.

Great. Well, it’s always nice to hear it when participants are happy, so congratulations again on your new BI Developer job and it’s been great talking with you Ann.
