If you’re looking for your first job in software development, then it may be harder than you think.

In a recent article published by the New Zealand Herald, jobs in the IT sector have risen 11.6% on last year. The rise in IT jobs is described as “meteoric” and it isn’t showing signs of slowing. Not only that, but the top five highest paid jobs in the country are all in IT! So if you’re coming out of University, don’t worry, there are jobs out there, and they pay well. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as walking out of the classroom and walking into your first job in software development.

Why it might be tough

As with many professions, experience is what potential employers look for. It’s all well and good having excellent marks in an educational environment, but so do most other candidates for the position you’re going for. What’s going to separate you from the pack is actual, real-world experience, and that’s hard to get. An employer will always hire someone who has experience, over someone who doesn’t. And why would they not? Working in an office along-side other people is more valuable than knowing the inside of any programming book. Dealing with real-time problems that appear in everyday business situations is not something that can be learnt from a book. It’s only something that can come from experience, and that’s why an employer will choose an experienced candidate over everyone else.

What you can do about it

So how do you get the experience you need to get a job? It’s not like you can get a job without the experience! It’s a Catch 22 situation with a simple answer: Internship. An internship is a great way to get you that first job in software development. Through an IT internship, you can get that vital real-world experience that you need to break into the industry and get ahead of your fellow Graduates. An Internship allows you to work alongside established IT professionals, deal with paying clients and solve real-time problems.

Why Industry Connect

There’s no one better in Auckland to help you find your first job in software development than Industry Connect. We’ve been working in the IT industry for over almost two decades, and know this business inside-out. We recognise that most It employers don’t want to bother with the time and money it takes to “up-skill” a new employee, and would rather hire someone at that level to begin with. We can get you to that level, so when it comes to your first job in software development, you’re already ahead of the pack. Here with us, you’ll be working with experienced developers and real clients. Here you’ll learn the in’s and out’s of the industry, gaining an understanding of how business works. With us you will work alongside other developers, both experienced and new Graduates like yourself, acquiring communication skills, both professionally and personally.

So if you’re having trouble finding your first job in software development, then an Internship with Industry Connect is the answer!
