Once again an Industry Connect graduate has gone on to gain their first job as a software developer.

We caught up with Eric to ask him about his time with us, and how Industry Connect helped him.

First of all, congrats on the new job! Tell us, before you came to industry Connect, what was your experience overseas and what it was like trying to find a job in the New Zealand market.

Originally I had three years experience as a developer in China, and after I came to New Zealand I did my graduate diploma. After that I tried for about half a year, but I couldn’t find a job. That’s when I choose to join Industry Connect to find a more opportunity to find a job.

You already had experience overseas and you’ve done a graduate diploma, do you want to tell us about the technical skills that you picked up at Industry Connect based on the fact that you already had a lot of skill going into it?

At Industry Connect we can keep in touch with some latest technologies which are more used in New Zealand like C# and .Net. Because my previous experience is not related to web development, if I wanted to jump into this area, I needed experience, and with Industry Connect I got a lot of technical practice.

In terms of the other side of it, the soft skills, can you tell us a bit about some of the soft skills that you picked up in Industry Connect that helped you land the job and also be confident in being able to carry out the job?

I really think the most important soft skill you learn is communication, because and you know that communication is important from the beginning to the ending of the final job. At Industry Connect, there is a really beautiful environment where you can communicate from the very beginning. As you handle tasks, if something is delayed, you can tell you leaders and teammates and it’s no problem. I really love that here.

What would you say to anyone who was in a similar situation to you? They’ve had experience and they’re struggling to find a job in the New Zealand market?

Well, I would recommend they come here. In fact, I wish I would’ve come here earlier! Some people might have some missing parts to finding a job, some of them might lack the experience of working here in New Zealand, and some of them might not be confident in their technical skills. At Industry Connect, you will find your weakness and work on it, so yeah, I would definitely recommend them to everyone.

Thanks to Eric, and congratulations again on his first job as a software developer!
