“I learned lots of things, even though I already had experience with those developer tools.”

The IT industry is one of the fastest changing in the world.

If you don’t constantly keep up-to-date with the latest trends and developments, then you might one day suddenly realise you’ve been left behind, and everyone else is ahead of you in technical skills and knowledge.

A degree at University in Computer Science can be four years long.

Four years!

Imagine how much has happened in software in the past four years!

You need to be learning in real-time, not reading from a book which was written before Instagram even existed.

Eric had experience, but needed some in-demand skills

Eric Yu is a great example of why someone needs to keep up with their technical skills.

Eric came from China where he had a history as a software developer, but it was only when he came to New Zealand he realised how far behind he was with in-demand skills.

That’s when he found Industry Connect and joined our BI programme.

“I think it’s really a good course, because I had done some things in China, but I did not know BI too well, so I learned a lot of things for that. I also gained some new knowledge with things like SSIS, SSAS.”

But it wasn’t just the technical skills Eric learned while he was with us. He joined MVP Studios on an internship and got to meet some wonderful people.

“I think also some friends you meet, you can call friends or some colleagues in MVP Studio, and they share just lots of experience in the meetings, so I also learned lots of things from them, so thanks a lot.”

So would Eric recommend Industry Connect to someone in the same position as he was?

“Yeah, definitely, because you know if someone wants to take some local programs, I think joining Industry Connect is a very good path to get some experience.”

Eric has now secured himself a Managed Service Data Consultant position at Altis Consulting Ltd in Auckland thanks to our help.
