Once again Industry Connect’s job-ready programme has been successful in helping someone launch their career in the IT industry.

Eric just landed his first job as a software developer after completing our course, and so we caught up with him to ask about his time with Industry Connect.

Congratulations Eric! First off, could you tell us a bit about your experience overseas, and then what it was like trying to find a job here in New Zealand?

Well I original had three years experience as a developer in China. When I came to New Zealand I got my Graduate Diploma, and then tried for about half a year to find a job. It was then I choose to join Industry Connect, to find more opportunity to find a job.

You already had experience and a lot of skill going into Industry Connect, did you learn any news skills with us?

Here at Industry Connect we can keep up-to-date with the latest technologies, especially the ones which are more used here in New Zealand, like C# and .Net.

Because my previous job experience isn’t related to web development, so if I want a job in this area, I need a lot of experience. I got a lot of technical practices here with Industry Connect.

And where there any soft-skills you picked up here at Industry Connect that helped you land the job?

I think the most important soft-skill I picked up here at Industry Connect was communication. Communication is important from the beginning to the end of the finding a job process. Here at Industry Connect we have a real-world working environment, so communicating will start when you begin a task.

If you have something delayed, you can tell your leaders and tell your team mates, so I really gained a lot of communication skills from coming here.

So what would you say to anyone in a similar situation to you? They’ve come to New Zealand, they’re struggling to find a job in the market…

I would recommend them to come to Industry Connect. In fact, I wish I had’ve come here earlier.

Some people might be missing parts to finding a job. Some might not have the experience of working in New Zealand, some might not be confident in their technical skills. Here at Industry Connect you can find out what your missing, and then fix them.

Thank you Eric, and again, a huge congratulations on your first job as a software developer, and we wish you all the best for the future.

If you have trouble getting a job in the New Zealand IT sector, then give us a call. We can help get you job-ready in no time!
