Landing a job as a web developer can be tough, especially if you’ve come here from another country and English isn’t your first language.
Even with lots of experience, coming to New Zealand doesn’t mean you’ll walk into a job. The industry is different here, and the job-hunting process is complicated.
Salomon discovered this when he arrived in Auckland, but after joining Industry Connect, he found a job as a web developer.
We caught up with him to ask him about his time with us.
Firstly, huge congratulations on the job! Can you tell us a bit about your experience before joining Industry Connect, both here and internationally?
Yeah, I was a fresh graduate with no experience, and I found it really hard to find a job without that experience. I looked at a lot of jobs, but didn’t get any positive response, and then my friend introduced me to Industry Connect.
During your time here what kind of technical skill did you pick up along the way?
Aside from those technical skills you picked up, what were some of the soft skills that you found most valuable.
Yeah, we learned a lot of skills, especially preparing for interviews. I also enjoyed working in a team, and in that team environment.
As an intern, what kind of value did you get out of working on live projects?
It was great for commercial experience, which was very valuable for me, because I was looking for that type of experience, as it helped me get a job.
And what would your advice be to anyone who is looking at doing an Industry Connect course?
I would like to recommend Industry Connect to the people who are looking for a software developer job. This is the right place for you.
Fantastic. Well, once again congratulations on your new job as a web developer!
