Without Industry Connect I don’t know how I could get experience in the IT industry because I lacked a lot of confidence in the beginning.

Simon has been working with us for a while, but now he’s taking a step up in his career after landing a new position as a senior software developer.

We caught up with our friend to ask him how Industry Connect have helped him and his career.

What would you suggest to people who are struggling in getting their first IT job?

Local experience is important. Because the you know more about the local market I think it’s the same as if you are back in your own country. Of course it’s probably better to have some knowledge about the local culture even if it’s not in New Zealand, but in other countries too.

It’s important to join in with other cultures, you need to mix in with locals so you won’t just get ignored. If you go and you don’t mix with your colleagues, then it’s very hard to maintain the relationship with your work colleagues.

Don’t be shy of learning! You have to learn intensively every day, so that my advice; to keep on studying and renew that energy every day, even if it doesn’t match with the current job. This is good to learn new technology that may be used for the future.

Also of course you have to know how to arrange your time as well, because usually for developers you spend a lot of time on a computer, so you have to manage your time, and at certain times you relax a bit otherwise it’s not very good for your health.

You also have to be confident with your coding. If you do things that you struggle with, sometimes you can try it out and test it out and see if it suits. It probably suits, you never know!

Would you like to share your experience from your first job?

My first job was with you guys say, two, three years ago, and then I worked hard, doing a few projects and getting contracts, and now I have a job at Aimy as a senior software developer.

Before I was struggling with the coding, but now I’m getting better with the technology and as I said before, my colleagues helped me.

Would you recommend Industry Connect to everyone?

Yeah, definitely right? I mean otherwise I couldn’t get to this level.

Without Industry Connect I don’t know how I could get experience in the IT industry because I lacked a lot of confidence in the beginning. After I joined Industry Connect, everyone was very helpful and so even though it’s hard for me to change my personality, it’s now better than before I joined, which I’m very happy with.
