Harry Lo was one of the thousands of people looking for a job as a software developer. Well, he’s not looking any longer because he just landed one!
The difference between Harry and the thousands of others is simple: Industry Connect.
We caught up with Harry before he set off on his new career to ask him about his time with us.
Congratulations Harry! How did Industry Connect help you throughout your internship?
Well the first thing was they gave me experience. Experience building the whole application, yeah, it was a very good opportunity.
The second thing is the psychological thing; the encouragement. “We can achieve this and we can do that!” Yeah, lots of encouragement.
The mentor helped me a lot. Sometimes when I tell people something I get stuck in too many layers and pulled in too many directions. They kept it to one single idea and made the conversation more efficient.
Sometimes I got stuck in the technical issues, and maybe he didn’t reply immediately, gradually he would give me quite a lot of help.
Would you recommend Industry Connect to everyone?
Yes, yes, sure. From a technical point of view and a psychological point of view, I would recommend both.
I think in New Zealand, I found that looking for a job is not just about the technical. There are lots of psychological considerations. They’re thinking about how you would handle high pressure, that kind of thing.
At the interview they asked me attitude questions, not many technical questions, but I think the practice I had at Industry Connect really helped me get the job.
In Australia, once you applied for a job, you did the technical test online. I think that’s a big difference between the two countries. New Zealand is special, they ask more about your attitude rather than your technical skills.
Thank you Harry and congratulations again on your new job as a software developer. Good luck!
