I spent a lot of money and time to get my degree, so I was thinking the least I could do is work in the industry.

If you’ve just graduated and are now struggling to find a job, then don’t panic.

Thousands of Graduates struggle each year to find work, and usually for the same reason – they’ve no experience.

Employers want someone who knows what they’re doing in practice, not just in theory.

They want people who have met deadlines, dealt with clients, and worked on real-world projects.

And who can blame them? Some of these projects cost millions of dollars. They want people with experience to handle the work.

But how do you get experience before getting a job?

That’s where Industry Connect can help.

Evan was in the same boat

Evan had the same problem. He was fresh out of Uni, but couldn’t find work because he had no experience. Now he’s secured a job at Industracom as a developer.

“I joined Industry Connect because I was looking for a job.  And it’s a bit hard if you don’t have any experience. Even if you don’t have an internship, you’re just a fresh graduate and people don’t really look at your resume.

“I didn’t get back any calls, and I spent a lot of money and time to get my degree, so I was thinking the least I could do is work in the industry.

“I thought that Industry Connect could help me do that, and it’s a good place to start to meet people as well.”

Did you apply for jobs before joining us?

“No, actually I didn’t because I didn’t have my permanent residency status, and it’s like really hard to get a job without a permanent residency status if you don’t have great technical skills or experience, and I had neither.

“And I was actually working full-time, so, I didn’t have that much time to study and look for jobs as well, so, I actually haven’t applied for that many jobs before I joined Industry Connect.”

What was your experience of MVP Studio?

“It was quite good, because they have a lot of great insights. Like, I didn’t really know what the market is looking for. I didn’t know that which one is the popular JobScape library or proper formats for a resume.

“And how people call you for interviews. The only thing that matters for interviews is your resume. If your resume is good, people will call you. That’s the only thing that matters. And if they call you, then you have a chance to go into the next step. And the next step. But, if your resume is not good, then obviously people aren’t gonna call you for interview. I mean, that alone is a valuable insight.

“And also, they tell you what technologies you should study. For example, there’s not that many jobs in C Plus Plus in Sydney. It doesn’t matter if you’re great at C Plus Plus developer, it’s going to be probably more difficult to get a job than like, if you’re an average software developer.

“Those are some really good starting points. Interview tips are good too. And also, you have a community with like-minded people and you get to know people, and build your relationships, references, that’s also great.

“And I also managed to work on some technical projects and did some finished some tasks and that also really helps you build your confidence and it enables you to work in the environment because when you’re going to go for a job and it’s going to be a little bit harder than your internship, the internship kind of like prepares you to excel in the job environment as well.

“You face a lot of similar problems, and at least you have experienced how to approach problems and it also gives you confidence and that’s really great.”

Would you recommend Industry Connect?

Yeah, I would, but I think it’s really not going to help anyone if they don’t put in the effort. Like, it doesn’t really matter, if someone gives you advice and you don’t follow that advice, it don’t really matter.

“But if I think someone is really interested and really willing to work hard and put the effort, then yeah, I would definitely recommend Industry Connect because they can certainly show you that right path.

“I mean, I just, I didn’t even finish my internship to be honest! My internship was officially for three months and I got the job in less than three months! And I heard many people that got the job in like one week.

“So all the people I know, that actually put it the effort, I think you are good enough to get a job. But before that point, no. You’re not good enough to get a job, and you’re not going to get a job because when you go to technical interviews, people are going to ask you technical questions. And if you can’t answer that and if you don’t have the correct knowledge and expertise, there’s really no point.

“Industry Connect is good, and it’s obviously, it’s going to help you, but first, I think you need to help yourself.”
